The One Heart Equestrian Therapy Team traveled Sept. 12 from its host site, Stagecoach Stables in Ames, to Jester Park Equestrian Center near Saylorville Lake to compete in the State Special Olympics Equestrian Competition.

Twenty riders on six horses entered in 31 classes, resulting in 14 gold, 10 silver, and six bronze medals, and one fourth-place ribbon.

The competition featured a variety of classes designed to test the athletes’ skills as well as for having fun. Skill classes were evaluated by a judge in horsemanship walk-only and horsemanship walk/trot. Riders participated in English, Western and other tack adapted to the needs of the rider. A PBS film crew was on hand filming a documentary of the event.
